Hotel Astor Antique Ceramic Tip or Card Tray, Made For Hotel Astor in Germany by L(azarsus) Straus and Sons, New York City

Incredible pictorial transfer of the newly opened Hotel Astor in Times Square in 1904. Lazarus Straus (Unknown connection to Levi Strauss) purchased Macy’s Department Store in 1896 and probably was the agent to have these made for the Hotel before WWI. The Hotel Astor was in business 1904 to 1967. Two interesting bits of trivia Isidor (son of Lazarus) Straus and his beloved wife Ida refused to leave the Titanic and died together. Also the bar at the Hotel Astor was a discreet meeting place for NYC gays. Tray dimensions 6.25” long by 4.75” wide. Decorated with their Iconic asters. Beautiful condition. Beautiful gift for the Times Square, Hotel Astor, NYC lover or collector. (#262 AHAV/E C259M 9-1-20)
